Offyette Sportster Mini Car

A beautifully hand-built Offyette Sportster, meticulously crafted using the original molds and tooling but upgraded with modern mechanical and safety features. Originally produced by the Larc Douglass Company just outside New York City, the Sportster is celebrated as one of the most exquisitely scaled kid’s cars ever made. This model is the second motorized, child-sized racer designed by Carl Schiller, a pioneer in the quarter midget genre. His first creation, the single-seat Offyette Racer, was built in 1949 for his son, Douglas.

The Sportster’s body is hand-laid structural fiberglass, an impressive 3/8-inch thick. It features a modified MG Brooklands windscreen and an interior upholstered with premium imported European leather. Staying true to its original design, the rear axle is a 1-inch assembly supported by pillow block bearings mounted on oak towers. The front axle is crafted from 1.25-inch square stainless-steel tubing with 5/8-inch spindles and an adjustable sprung suspension. The steering system retains the original casting steering wheel, connected to a rack-and-pinion setup, while a hydraulic disc brake has been added for enhanced safety.

Period-correct 6-inch Carlisle sawtooth tires with functioning knock-off spinners adorn the car, completing its vintage aesthetic. While the original Sportster was powered by a Continental engine, this build opts for a reliable Honda GX120 motor paired with a centrifugal clutch. The drivetrain features a #40 chain driving a 40-tooth Martin Gear solid sprocket, achieving a top speed of approximately 20 mph. The Dimensions are 84” L x 24” W x 33” H.
